Because we splurged on an apparently yummy beer (New Belgium Sunshine Wheat), we had to cut back a bit on the wine. Despite much trepidation, we decided to go with boxed wine because it was just so much more economical (it equates to $13 for 4 bottles of wine!). We found three different brands that outshone bottled wine (in the $15-20 range), so we went for it.
Today, the New York Times ran an op-ed piece about the environmental benefits of boxed wine. Apparently, bottled wine has such a greater carbon footprint because it's that much heavier to ship.
That's great! I didn't even realize we were being more eco-friendly by going the boxed wine route. Usually, the more environmentally-conscious a choice is, the more expensive it is. I'm glad that's not the case here (pun intended).

Hi! I just wanted to say that I thought your post was great, and made an excellent about how things that are environmentally friend are usually expensive. I write for the website findingdulcinea.com and I wrote about your entry in a story, and linked to your blog, if you'd like to check it out. I found this to be a wonderful reaffirmation of a position I'd already taken. My fiance and I wanted to have an open bar as well, but we really can't afford to supply liquor for everyone. We've opted to having two types of beer - a full beer and a light beer. I said that we should just go ahead for boxed wine, but he was worried that it wasn't reception appropriate. However, I think that after reading the opinion of someone else he will definitely change his mind. We were debating on whether or not to make a 'punch' similar to the concept you used with the frozen margaritas. Basically just a few massive bowls of sangria, and when it's out it's out. But end the end, we decided to go the way of nixing that idea -- simply because his rather large family don't drink any time other than weddings and funerals, but when they do, it gets expensive quick. Another option I've heard of is people asking those close to them to bring their own liquor. We just weren't comfortable asking people to do that, when most of the people attending are from out of town and wouldn't be able to acquire the liquor once they arrived. Who knows though! There's still time :)
What brands of boxed wine did you use? I'd love to do boxed wine! Thanks!
