DIY: Make Your Own Butter

Oh wow. The newest item on my to-do list: Make butter. Plus I still need to make my own yogurt using the crock pot.

I just need to find me some motivation first. It's been a rough week. I just haven't wanted to do any of my work. Blah.

You found a recipe for yogurt in a crock pot? I have one of those! It makes sense that it would work, because you just need a receptacle that holds heat evenly.

I would love to hear how it turns out.

yogurt in a crock pot is great. we worked out the math, and it's costs about 1/10 of what it would if store bought!
the butter seems a little more overwhelming, but let us know how it turns out!

I used to run away from home EVERY SINGLE DAY to my neighbor's house about a 1/4 of a mile away. (my mom is not a very nice person, especially to me!)
My dear sweet neighbor's house was my safe haven. After my chores were done I would ride to her house where about once a month or so she would have the cream from 2 gallons of fresh from the cow milk seperated and waiting for me in a 5 gl pail. I would start off with her electric mixer and let that run until I started seeing chunck about the size of a pecan floating around in the mixture. Then I would have to switch to mixing (basically swirling) by hand. My hand would be completely numb so I'm sure you could keep using the beater at this point. After a while she would deem it "ready". She had an old form that she had lined with cheese cloth that we would pack the fresh butter in. Once it was full we would put the bottom part of the form on there and press out the extra liquid.
After unmolding it she would cut it in half then in half again to get 4 sticks of butter. Sometimes we would add salt to it before the molding process but most of the time we didn't.
It was the bestest tasting butter EVER!!!!

Butter is the easiest thing I ever made! And it was by complete accident!

I was trying to make whipped cream for a cake, the phone rang and I got a bit chatty, and when I came back? Butter. A very large amount of butter.

Oh my goodness, you'll lover making your own butter. I've done it using just a mason jar, some cream and a pinch of salt. You just shake it out until a big delicious glob of butter forms. A little tutorial right here: http://unspeakablevisions.blogspot.com/2008/08/making-your-own-butter.html... but it's so easy you probably won't need it!

By the way, love the blog!

We have decided that we're trying to make everything from scratch. We've done our own re-fried beans (which are so much better, and cheaper than canned) and we made homemade potato chips last night (so good!).

I'd love to get to the point where we eat no processed foods!
