Weekend Recap

My new job started last Monday (teaching 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade at a public Montessori school). It's great but exhausting. I usually spend about ten hours at school, and then I come home and pretty much work for a few more hours until I fall fast asleep around 9:30 or 10:00.

My schedule won't be so physically demanding indefinitely; I'm just trying to accomplish a pretty extensive list of start-up tasks.

Thankfully this past weekend, a lovely colleague of Matt's offered to let us use her condo in Galveston. Score!

We stayed home Friday night so Matt could attend the karaoke outing he had planned (I was home, um, sleeping). On Saturday, we swung by my school to make an appearance at the ice-cream social. Then we high-tailed it out of Houston and headed for the shore.

It was most certainly a low-key evening. We ordered pizza by the pool and then spent approximately five hours watching reality TV. Since we don't have a TV in our house (just a screen and player for DVDs), it was a novel (and addicting) experience.

On Sunday, I ran Hoss on the beach (I'm responsible for exercising him on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays) and then Matt and I swam in the pool. We drove to a convenience store to pick up breakfast (a can of cinnamon rolls) and lunch (another pizza). We worked and read and looked out over the ocean.

It's sheer loveliness to spend time with the loves of your life. I am so thankful for every day I spend with Matt. I am grateful for our health, mobility, and sense of adventure. I want to take full advantage of these gifts while we have them.

On the horizon:
  1. Belize (although I'm going with my best friend rather than my husband)
  2. Florida + Indiana for Christmas
  3. Big Bend + Marfa for spring break
  4. Banff + British Columbia next summer

When I lived in the Woodlands I worked for a Doctor and his wife. They had a little yellow beach house on the waterfront over on Boliver. If there wasn't someone staying in it (especially on holiday weekends) they would give me $20 for gas and I would drive down and housesit.
I credit that house with healing my soul. The water may not be crystal clear but just being near the water was very healing.
Sad to say...the little house is no more. It was destroyed along with the majority of Boliver Pen.

Some people are inclined to point up their difficulties, the other's flaws... So dreary!
I like your vision (and we share it) about taking "full advantage of these gifts while we have them".
We live like if this day is our last one and we don't want to throw it away (but we make plans too!).

So glad to hear you found time for downtime!

When you go to Banff, I would seriously recommend doing a hike up Lake Louise. It's a beautiful trail that is very, very steep but short (only about three hours up, but an hour down) and a wonderful tea house awaits at the top!

Let me know if you want more recommendations; we spent a few weeks there two summers ago!

It makes me so happy to know Galveston is coming alive again and that you had a lovely weekend away. It also made me happy to see Hoss packed up and ready to go adventuring. Enjoy your downtime and enjoy your family love.

We just honeymooned in Banff. There is the most delish vegetarian restaurant in Banff called Nourish. It is teeny and they are super friendly. We went several times, I could not get enough of it! Very highly recommended! Also there is a short hike just outside the town site at Johnston Canyons that leads to 2 waterfalls. It is very beautiful!
